Mr. Xu started his professional career at GE Plastics in HK/China in 1991. In 1996, while completing his M.S. and Ph.D. studies, Mr. Xu worked as a research and teaching assistant in the Department of Chemistry at Simon Fraser University, Canada. During his graduate study, he took electrochemistry/polymer courses, which involved fuel cells and energy storage device research. In the fall of 1999, Mr. Xu pursued a M.B.A. study on management of technology. That experience has helped him think strategically in the area of fast-growing technologies.

After completion of his M.B.A. degree in the end of 2000, Mr. Xu was offered a position as a strategic supplier development specialist at Global Thermoelectric Inc., where he evaluated fuel cell related core technologies and BOP (balance of plant) such as electrode formation process, testing stands, fuel reforming technologies, and power inverters. Later, he was promoted to a manager position. In that capacity, he oversaw three major strategic supplier agreement negotiations and due diligence processes. While at Global Thermoelectric, Inc, Mr. Xu also participated in various funding initiatives, notably the U.S. Department of Energy''s Solid State Energy Conversion Alliance (SECA) funding initiative.

In 2003, Mr. Xu was contracted as a foreign professor at Xiamen University, where he led the planning process for chemical energy, lithium-ion battery, and fuel cell development programs for the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. He also co-supervised 5 graduate students in battery and fuel cell research field.

In 2006, Mr. Xu undertook the role of VP of technology and chief technology officer for Microvast, Inc. His responsibilities included identifying innovative technology application opportunities such as optimizing lithium ion batteries and capacitors energy and power density for energy storage applications, and leading evaluation and selection processes for lithium-ion batteries, capacitors, process development, scale-ups, and manufacturing equipments. He led a team in developing the LiFePO4 and Li4Ti5O12 chemistry based battery types and mass production.  He sent proposals and technical reports to international OEM clients for Micro Hybrid, HEV, PHEV, and EV use battery development and testing protocols. He also represented the company in the public conferences and forums. Additionally, he oversaw company compliance with applicable local IP law, and improved the company''s IP protection strategy and portfolio. He participated in the invention process of battery development and high throughput testing equipments and has filed over 10 patents in US, China, and Europe.

Mr. Xu joined the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) as a principal scientist in September of 2011. He is part of the Advanced Vehicle Technology Section, in the Department of Engine and Vehicle Research Development, Engine, Emissions, and Vehicle Research Division. His field of research is energy storage systems with special focus on lithium ion battery systems and safety protocols. Currently, he is working on increasing involvement in consortiums and enhancing the Institute''s programs (i.e. Energy Storage System Evaluation and Safety or EssEs) through technical knowledge and project research. Mr. Xu is also involved in battery cell and pack testing activities. He will assist with battery system R&D and hybrid electric vehicle integration programs in general.

PROFESSIONAL CHRONOLOGY: development specialist/senior development specialist, GE Plastics, HK/China, 1991-5; research & teaching assistant, Simon Fraser University, Canada, 1996-9; development specialist/manager of strategic supplier technology, Global Thermoelectric Inc., Canada, 2000-3; foreign professor, Xiamen University, China, 2003-6; VP of technology and CTO, Microvast, Inc., 2006-11; Southwest Research Institute, principal scientist, 2011-present].

MEMBERSHIPS: Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE); American Chemical Society (ACS); American Ceramic Society (ACS).
